Body odor

Living with body odor can be terrible, particularly when its a very rare and very natural health condition the makes you actually smell like decaying fish or other such terrible odors.

This condition, which makes people smell exactly like rotten fish, is truely the worst kind of body odor one can imagine. In certain cases, it has brought about suicide and even the destruction of relationships and family.

Living With The Worst Body Odor: Ever

Trimethylaminuria – fish-odor syndrome – is an extremely rare disease that affects just between 200 to 600 people in the whole world. It has no cure and it makes a living hell for its victims.

Just recently, a British woman embattled by this rare condition, which has her always smelling like rotten fish, shared her story publicly. She was outspoken about the herculean struggles of living with such a condition as hers.

Living With Body Odor: Rare Condition That Makes A Person Smell Like Fish

This woman, Kelly Fidoe-White, has suffered from this condition her entire life and she is one of the few that have managed to conquer the accompanying urge to commit suicide. Don’t be surprised, so many people with this strange ailment never make it to 30 years of age as death by suicide is usually the case.

The true nature of this disease is that it leaves people who suffer it unable to break down a particular compound in food and this means that they can smell like a whole range of odors, including dead rats, onions, garlic, and feces, but the most popular odor is fish – rotten fish.

The Life Story Of The Woman Who Smells Like Fish | Body Odor

Kelly Fidoe-White is 36-year-old but was diagnosed only two years ago. Before that she was ignorant of her condition and would shower up to five times each day, take long baths with red hot water and use up whole cans of deodorant, all in a bid to mask or make the terrible smell go away – nothing worked.

As a direct consequence of this condition, Kelly suffers from very severe anxiety (nervousness around people) and so works nights as a radiographer, all in a big to limit the number of people she gets exposed to.

Aside from the regular red-hot baths, Kelly washes her hands with liquid detergents, takes extra care of her clothes, monitors what she eats, maintains the highest level of hygiene and cleanliness, does everything to be perfect, still, she smells like fish — rotten fish – always.

Kelly Fidoe-White is from Oldham, which is in Greater Manchester, England. She has struggled all her life with this extremely rare condition, Trimethylaminuria, a disorder better known as ‘fish-odor syndrome.’

Sufferers of this metabolic disorder regularly produce a range of strong body odors including rotten fish, rotten rat, onion, and feces. Kelly’s condition has her smelling like a cross between rotten fish and onions.

Apart from the smell itself, this disease has no other symptoms whatever but that smell is more than enough to cause you extreme anxiety and complete social isolation, as people cannot stand your presence.

The Cause of Fish Odor Syndrome

When the body is unable to break down a particular compound called choline, it disposes of (gets rid of) it through the sweat, urine, and breath …hence the smell. One consequence of this is that the victim cannot smell his or herself but others do.

Cure for Body Odor | Fish Odor Syndrome

Don’t be fooled, there is no cure or miracle drug for this ailment and even Kelly admits this. One reason for this is that the people who suffer from this condition are too few to bring about the launch of a research into the condition by any profit-minded organizations – a research that is sure to cost millions.

Kelly’s advice to other victims of this ailment is the same she got from doctors. ‘If the food smells going in, it’s gonna smell coming out.’

What Kelly is trying to say here is that foods such as fish, meat, onions, seafood, and garlic, are all major triggers of her condition.

Origin. Of Fish Odor Syndrome

People are not always born with this condition but it seems to be triggered by unclear changes in the body.

In Kelly’s case, she claims not to know exactly when she developed the condition but became all too aware of something being wrong in her early years at school.

Kelly recalls that on more than a few occasions as a kid, she would declare to her friends… “I just had fish paste sandwiches for lunch,” and the response she would get was … “You smell like fish”.

Now, this is where the suicide part comes in. Even Kelly admits that, as a teenager, this was very difficult to deal with. Teenagers cannot deal with the crushing depression that comes with utter social rejection and so often choose suicide as a way out.

Kelly’s Family

Yes, Kelly has a family and a good relationship going with a doting husband.

Kelly met her husband, Michael, 16 years ago through an internet dating site. Interestingly, even Michael, 45, admits that life with Kelly’s condition can sometimes be difficult but he never complains, always he keep things like that to himself.

Michael says that Kelly wasn’t confident when they first met but since then her self-assurance has improved greatly.

All Michael has is respect for his wife. He strongly believes that if it were him, he would never have accomplished half of what Kelly has.

From watching documentaries about her condition, Kelly took the bold step of getting tested for the diseases and it came back positive.

Kelly says she is more relaxed now that she understands her problem.

Kelly’s Solutions To Her Problem

From spending a ridiculous amount of time in the bath or shower, scrubbing with hot water until her skin turned red, Kelly’s diagnosis has seen her make a U-turn to adequate management of her condition.

Kelly has now learned that relentless bathing and washing only make her condition worse, and so she now adopts herself to a PH neutral body wash which works wonders for sensitive skin.

CONCLUSION

Today, the confident woman with the terrible body odor of rotten fish, Kelly, laughs and says that other people have their own bad body odor.

  1. Eze Eke, thank you for such a sensative re-telling of my story. Things can be hard with this condition but you can learn to get past it. Your right, Suicide is no option with this condition. I try to remember my contributions to society far outweigh the discomfort I cause others through my illness and I àm sure the same is true for anyone 😊
